Why bother with singing a bedtime prayer?

In Deuteronomy 6:7, the LORD commands His people to teach His words diligently to their children throughout the day. One of the times the LORD tells us to ‘speak of them’ is ‘when you lie down’. This selection of sung prayers will provide you with words and tunes that you and your children will soon come to cherish. Bedtime routines can have a powerful formative influence on your little ones. Settle them for the night by pointing them calmly and thankfully to God in prayer. You will encourage their peacefulness and gratitude as attitudes of life.

Deep themes and a solid heritage are good for children

You will find here prayers which are . They have stood the test of time. They are the opposite of the shallow children’s songs many of us parents were raised on. Sometimes the blunt and stark themes may jolt you, but be reassured: previous generations of Christian parents loved these words, and lovingly imparted them. They did not underestimate the reality of children’s bedtime fears. They did not hesitate to spell out a biblical response in verse. Their  prayers offered genuine comfort against the harsh realities of life in a fallen world. Their children appreciated it. When we use this kind of material, we are expressing a unity with our forefathers, from whom we can learn so much.
