The Jesse Tree
What is a ‘Jesse Tree’ ?
A Jesse Tree is a traditional way for Christians to teach their children about how God sent His Son to be the Saviour of the World. It is a family activity for Advent, which is the season just before Christmas. The family will set up a small tree, and hang on it one decoration a day. Each decoration is a reminder about a story from the Bible. The stories show how God prepared the world for the birth of Jesus Christ, his Son.
Why are they called Jesse Trees?
Historically, Jesse Trees have been works of art which show the human ancestry of Jesus Christ, as a family tree. Because Jesus is descended from King David, who was a son of Jesse, this became known as a Jesse Tree. Christian families often use Jesse Trees to retell the story of the Bible, using a symbol or picture as a reminder of each story.
How does this kit work?
This Jesse Tree kit pdf uses art rather than symbols to illustrate the stories. Also, although Advent begins in late November, this kit is simplified to contain 24 pictures, so that it will match up with the first 24 days of December.
How do I start?
Use dry branches in a flowerpot of sand, or make a cut-out paper tree mounted on the wall. Why not make an event of it with your children—take them to the countryside or woods to select a branch? One of the photos above shows a piece of blackthorn sprayed silver. Print out the decorations, cut them out and get them threaded up. Each day, your children hang a new decoration on the Jesse Tree. This brief daily routine can become a cherished family tradition, every Advent, it can create a joyful anticipation in each child's heart, focusing them on Jesus, in the exciting run-up to Christmas Day.
